Versailles, the Sun King's palace
About 20 km west of Paris, Versailles is the palace Louis XIV built to embody absolute monarchy: the Hall of Mirrors, the King's and Queen's State Apartments, and gardens laid out by André Le Nôtre — parterres, fountains, the Grand Canal — extended by the Grand and Petit Trianon and Marie-Antoinette's hamlet.
It remains Europe's most visited château, and one of the sites that sums up the French art of living under the Sun King.
A Versailles day trip from Paris, by Tesla
The drive from Paris usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. Aboard the quiet Tesla Model Y, your driver drops you as close to the entrance as possible and adapts the pace depending on whether you want the palace, the gardens, or a stop at the Trianon.
The excursion runs about 5 hours including travel. Tolls and parking are included; tickets for the palace and the Trianon are not.
Good to know before you go
The estate is vast: comfortable shoes are worth it, especially if you head out to the gardens and the Trianon. In spring and summer, the Grandes Eaux Musicales fountain shows run on select weekends — a highlight, but also busier crowds.
