Chantilly, château and Great Stables
About 40 km north of Paris, in the Oise département, the Château de Chantilly was home to the Princes of Condé. Ringed by a moat and gardens laid out by Le Nôtre, it houses the Musée Condé, France's second-largest collection of old master paintings after the Louvre — Raphael, Poussin, Ingres — still shown in its original 19th-century hang.
Right next door, the Grandes Écuries, built in the 18th century to house 240 horses, now hold the Musée du Cheval and, on select dates, live equestrian shows.
