Vaux-le-Vicomte, the château that inspired Versailles
About 55 km southeast of Paris, Vaux-le-Vicomte was built for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister, by the very trio — Le Vau, Le Brun, Le Nôtre — who would go on to build Versailles. The 1661 inauguration party was so lavish it triggered Fouquet's downfall and pushed the king to build something even grander.
The château is now regarded as one of the purest examples of French classical architecture, with its formal gardens and mirror-still moat.
